1,000 years ago people were trading gold for salt. Today that sounds like an unfair exchange but in the world of Medieval West Africa for some that salt meant preserving meat and replacing salt lost through perspiring. The salt trade of West Africa still exists and some are doing it the same way, mining by hand and transporting by camel. Look at these links to learn more.
